This recent image taken by the Hubble Space Telescope shows only a small portion of the Veil Nebula, a remnant of a colossal supernova explosion that occurred about 15,000 years ago in our own Milky Way galaxy. Here the supernova blast slams into a cloud of interstellar gas. The impact compresses and heats the cloud, causing the amazing emission. In this image oxygen is represented as blue, hydrogen as yellow, and sulfur as red.
